What is AP Biology?
AP Biology goes beyond recall. Questions give students data, graphs or an experimental setup and ask them to predict, justify or design.
That suits students who already know a lot of biology from CBSE, ICSE, IB or IGCSE, provided they learn to write in the AP style, including short calculations such as rates and simple statistics.
It is a common choice for students considering medicine, life sciences or biotechnology abroad, often alongside AP Chemistry.
How the May 2027 AP Biology exam is structured

A four-function calculator with square root, or a scientific calculator, is allowed in both sections. From 2027 graphing calculators are not allowed in AP Biology. The exam is hybrid (multiple choice in Bluebook, free response handwritten) and is scheduled for Monday 3 May 2027, afternoon session.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a graphing calculator in AP Biology?
Not from 2027. The College Board allows a four-function calculator with square root or a scientific calculator in both sections.
Is NEET or CBSE biology enough for AP Biology?
It gives a strong content base, but AP Biology tests experimental reasoning and written justification more than recall. We focus classes on data analysis and free-response writing.
Should my child take AP Biology and AP Chemistry together?
Many science-focused students do, and the two exams are on different days in May 2027 (Biology on 3 May, Chemistry on 6 May). The workload is significant, so we plan the timeline around school exams.
Where can my child sit the AP Biology exam in Pune?
The College Board does not sell AP exams directly to students. Your child tests either through a school that offers AP or through an authorized AP test centre that is open to outside students. The College Board's India page lists Kalyani School in Pune as an authorized centre, with further centres in Mumbai. The AP Biology exam is on Monday 3 May 2027 (afternoon session). For May 2027, most centres opened registration on 18 September 2026 and accept registrations until mid-November 2026, and some run a later window with extra fees. Each centre sets its own fees, deadlines and refund rules, so confirm directly with the centre.
How is AP Biology scored?
Every AP exam is reported on a 1 to 5 scale. The College Board describes a 3 as qualified, a 4 as very well qualified and a 5 as extremely well qualified. Universities decide for themselves which scores they accept for credit, placement or admission, so check the policy of each university on your list. Scores for the May 2027 exams are due in July 2027.
